How does the story of each unique quilt begin? As a quilter commences her initial design work, thoughts grow and develop from the design board to the sewing machine. Each of her children`s quilts tells its own story, as the pieces are cut from carefully chosen fabrics, sewn carefully into patterns. The story`s is illustrated through color, design, and texture. Whether the quilter has a special child in mind, as she sews and quilts, or if the quilter is designing and quilting for the love of her art, either way, the children`s quilts come to life step by step.
As with a handmade quilt, each block is put in a certain color pattern for the overall effect. There is nothing better than to create something that will last for years and be handed down to future generations. That is what happens with a beautiful crochet quilt that has been made with love and care. In addition, all who view it will remark on the amount of work that had to be done and admire the person who was able to complete such a thrilling piece of art.
It was not until the 1970s that this unique category of quilts came to be recognized and regarded as "official" by the larger quilting community. However, these so-called experts, while taking a step in the right direction, inadvertently caused more harm initially. They stated that African American quilts, in order to be categorized as such, had to fall within certain narrowly defined parameters, and made by black women who resided in a particular geographical region of the United States. This, then, meant that the vast majority of African American quilters were still left virtually unrecognized and unwelcomed into the quilting community, as their work fell neither in the category of traditional quilting or within the newly defined category of African American quilting.
For making the design wall, we need to stick the three layers of fabric that go into the making of the quit, batting and fastening them together with the help of safety pins. Using a walking foot, we need to stitch on the vertical, marked line down the center of the fabric and continue sewing vertical lines out to the rim of the fabric. Once that is done, we need to stitch the horizontal lines in the same manner. Once the entire vertical as well as the horizontal lines is sewn, we need to straighten and square the edges.
People who do not particularly like to make quilts using material and a sewing machine have found that they can make beautiful quilts by crocheting. When placed on a bed the quilts stand out with their bright colors and complicated designs. It has been found that designs such as Dresden plate are lovely when done by crochet. Anyone who has done any of the basic crochet stitches can complete a crochet quilt. The result is a beautiful creation that, unlike a regular handmade or purchased quilt, does not need a filler. In addition, it has the advantage that it can be turned and the same beautiful pattern is on the other side.
