Depending on the size of the design wall, we need to buy fabric for both the front and the back, and cut it to the preferred size. The fabric used at the back can be the same that is used in front. We must keep in mind not to use too heavy a fabric. If the design wall is big enough to require seaming together the fabrics, using a flannel sheet can be considered. It is a good idea to pre wash all fabric used. Polyester is not a first-rate option for a design wall since it tends to have a good deal of loft and pills. A total cotton batting is the best choice. Quilts made with cotton batts are popular all the year round. They do not hold heat and make you feel cooler during summers. At the same time, they absorb and trap air and keep you warm on cold wintry nights.
Fortunately, the definition of African American quilting became broader in the 1980s, ironically enough because of the pioneering work of such women as Dr. Mazloomi herself, along with a number of her contemporaries. The first African American quilting guild was formed as a result of an advertisement placed by Mazloomi in a magazine; nine women responded. Today, the Women of Color Quilter`s Network has approximately 1700 members, some of whom are accomplished artists, speakers, and authors themselves. Similar guilds have since been formed.
Of course, things being what they are, it doesn`t take harsh weather to cause us to feel the need for some consolation. No-o! These days, the perils of routine living, alone, can put us on edge. Then, throw in the state of the world, and the economy, and it`s enough to send anyone running for cover. Although we often seek out the people who normally support us during trying times, in many cases, they`re just as overwhelmed as we are.
Just because it`s called a "quilt" display rack doesn`t mean that its use is limited to such items. Quilt racks would also be useful as in-store displays to advertise latest store deals, services, and products. You could also use these to hang curtains, which could then be use to surround your exhibitor space. Teachers can even use these to feature class artwork projects or as teaching aids. Photographers are also fond of using these to hold their background graphics during their outdoor pictorial sessions.
With a preface written by Faith Ringgold and a foreword written by Cuesta Benberry, also quilters, writers and researchers within their own right, Spirits of the Cloth can be considered to be an academic work within the field of African American quilting. As a quilter, researcher, writer, historian, curator and lecturer regarded as an authority on the subject, Dr. Mazloomi`s scholarly work provides the uninitiated with a wealth of information on a topic virtually unknown before the latter quarter of the 20th century. The text highlights 150 quilts, referred to by the author as the "stories" of the artists who created them.
