Pierrette Segal. Quilt Display. August 30th , 2017.
Mazloomi discusses how, initially, the work of African American quilters was largely ignored by the traditional quilting community, as it did not conform to traditional, commonly-held practices and beliefs surrounding quilting. Quilts created by African American quilters had, naturally, been influenced by the African culture from which the quilters and their ancestors had come. Even in the quilts of today, the use of bold, strong, vibrant color can be seen in the quilts of their black creators.
It allows her to stand back and assess the flow of colors, the combination effect and the effects of various patterns in a current quilt making project. In the initial stages, a design wall helps us to cut out and accumulate block or appliqué pieces to assess whether the selection and combination of colors are working. As work progresses, we can also mount each new section as and when we finish so that we can assess the work and make necessary changes. You can make various color adjustments in the borders based on what you perceive about the middle of the quilt while it hangs on the design wall.
In olden days, pioneer families that braved the hostile, westward trails, in hopes of finding new land, and new lives, had to stock up on supplies, as they prepared for their journeys. They needed provisions that would not only assist with their safe passage, but would help them to survive, when they reached their destinations. Along with several months` worth of food, ammunition, and clothing, it was recommended that every family pack enough bedding to last for a few years, with two or three quilts or blankets per person.
Often the quilt is a gift from a good friend and they want to display it on a quality rack. Some online retailers stock dozens of models. You will be able to find something that not only meets your budget but also matches your current furniture. If you have a lot of wooden things in your living room already an oak quilt rack might be a good match. Some other people might prefer something metallic. Often steel or brass racks will be available.
This will probably be the best option if you are looking to preserve your quilt. But this simply means you will not be able to enjoy it all. What`s the point of having a quilt if it`s going to be stashed away where it cannot be seen or used? This is why many quilt owners eventually by a rack to store it on. With an official piece of furniture to place it own, family members will be more respectful. And just as important, you will be able to display it in whatever room you please.
